Hair and Beauty in 2021 - A Year in Review

Salons were forced to temporarily close due to the lockdown that occurred in the global pandemic. 

Hairdressers and beauticians were forced to temporarily close their doors and even if you were mobile you still couldn't perform any treatments to your clients. Due to being in lockdown a few times these salons were shut for months which was a very hard time for most businesses causing some to permanently close. Once the news was announced salons could finally be open back in April there was a high demand for appointments. 
There have been quite a few treatments since salons have been opened that have been quite popular as a lot of people have tried to DIY. 

- Brow lamination 
- Dermaplaning - facials 
- Lash lift & tint
- Semi-permanent makeup
- Semi-permanent lashes
- Manicures

Brow lamination is a new and innovative beauty treatment that has continued to grow in popularity, recreating the trending look of thicker and fuller brows. This treatment is great if you want longer-lasting results of keeping brows in place. 

Facials have also been very popular due to our faces being constantly covered up with face masks which have caused skin problems. Facials such as derma planning are a great way to exfoliate your face as derma planning gets rid of all the dirt, dead skin cells and vellus hair also known as peach fuzz. 

Lash lift is a great way to make your eyes appear more open and bright. A lash lift can also make your eyelashes appear longer. Having a lash tint is a great way to darken and thicken your lashes and you don't have to keep applying mascara. 

Semi-permanent makeup has become increasingly popular this year such as lip blush. It is a cosmetic tattoo of the lips that enhances the beauty of your natural lip colour. Improving the shape of your lips, giving definition and giving an illusion of fuller lips. 

Semi-permanent lashes create a naturally beautified look (depending on the style you opt for). So they're perfect for clients with busy schedules who want to look made up without spending hours in the morning. 

Manicures are also popular since lockdown as everyone has had to do their own nails or their nails were really grown out. So when nail salons were open everyone rushed to book appointments so they could have beautiful nails again.

- Balayage 

Hair treatments such as Osmo Chromaplex and Olaplex have been popular since the salons opened as nobody has been taking care of their hair. Some clients have also been damaging their hair by bleaching or colouring their hair during the lockdown. A hair treatment was much needed to restore their hair to normal.

Blonde hair clients especially needed a much-needed root touch up after lockdown as their roots were very outgrown and very noticeable. Not just blondes anybody who gets their hair coloured would have had outgrown roots so a root touch up was very popular.

Bright wild colours were popular this year as a lot of clients have been working from home which means they could be a bit more experimental with colour as they might not have been allowed to have bright hair due to having an office job. Some might have dreamed of trying a new colour so having time at home was a perfect opportunity to experiment. 

After the lockdowns, balayage were popular as it is very natural and is very easy to maintain. With clients going so long without getting their hair done and some getting used to the outgrown root look, balayage is the perfect option as you don't need to go to the hairdressers as much and leaves the hair with no obvious or harsh regrowth lines. 

- Blunt Bob (It Seems like every celebrity is opting for a chic blunt bob especially if it is kept precise, sleek and with gently rounded edges framing the face)
- Bangs ( Any type of bangs has been trending this year such as curtain bangs, Wispy bangs, Face framing bangs etc )
- Hair extensions ( You can add hair extensions for layers and thickness, not just length. With longer layers, you can get the best out of your hair without the heavy feeling with the added bonus of natural movement. Hair extensions were also a quick fix while salons were closed. )
- Jumbo box braids ( People who have textured hair are skipping the time it takes to create tiny braids, and choosing to wear 30 braids or less and is very popular on Instagram )

- Pastel Tones ( Cute and Instagrammable )
- Abstract Shapes ( Funky and quirky shapes )
- Unique French Manicures ( Instead of the usual white tips people have been having bold colours) 
- Natural Nails ( Due to covid restrictions people have  been using this time to take a break from extensions and gels )
- Squiggly Nail Art ( Squiggles, Wavy lines and doodles are a fun way to add something extra to your manicure )

- Graphic Eyeliner ( Bold colours to express yourself )
- Natural Looking Brows ( Brow lamination is a perfect way to achieve natural bows ) 
- Faux Freckles ( Fake freckles add a little extra fun to a look )
- No Makeup Makeup ( Fresh, healthy and hydrated skin )
- Matte skin ( Matte makeup is less likely to transfer onto your face mask and is perfect for women who don't mind wearing a little foundation under their mask )

To sum up, 2021 has not been the easiest of years, especially for the hair and beauty industry as social distancing rules resulted in in-salon capacity falling down by 70% compared to before the pandemic. The hair and beauty business also lost an average of two-hour appointments per stylist/therapist a day due to the restrictions. Some businesses had to permanently close due to a loss of clients and due to a loss of revenue. There are a lot of hairdressers and beauticians now wich are getting back on their feet.

And is looking positive for the future. Some clients have adopted a low maintenance routine and have found it liberating but for others, time spent away from the hairdressing chair or salon has only reconfirmed their love of the salon. 

Hopefully, next year is bigger, better and brighter than 2021.
